When the Playstation 2 was released it was the highest-selling console of its time. Microsoft knew if they wanted to compete with Sony by dropping their first gaming console they would have to make some serious technological improvements within the XBox to set it aside from any other gaming console during that time. This was a major technological improvement to the gaming console world.
