About the Creators - Spring 2021
Alexis Lopez: Hi! I'm Alexis Lopez, I'm from Dallas, Texas and I am a junior at Colorado University, Boulder. Growing up, I always had a passion for the film industry, most notably the history and evolution of cinematography and the ways in which cinema has impacted mainstream culture. So naturally, when given the opportunity to research a piece of cinema history, I was immediately invested in the project. Researching the Revere Ranger opened my eyes to the fine details that often go unnoticed in cinema history, such as this camera's impact on amateur cinema. Hopefully, upon viewing my work, people walk away with a newfound appreciation for this camera and learn something new!
Brendan Grace-Hall: My name is Brendan Grace, I am from Denver, Colorado and I’m sophomore at CU Boulder. I am majoring in Strategic Communications and I took this course because I’m interested in the history of technology. I specifically chose a film camera because you don’t see them too much anymore, and this project was perfect for diving into research on the Argus C3.
Brittany Hanna: Hello! My name is Brittany Hanna, I am from Denver Colorado. I am studying Environmental studies at CU Boulder. I love the environment and I want to be able to help mother nature, however I think it is important to be a well-rounded student. I took this class with interest in technology, wanting to further my knowledge about our society and its technology, and I found the right place for that journey!
Caitlin Mayer: Hi! My name is Caitlin Mayer and I am originally from Chicago, Illinois and I am a freshman at the University of Colorado-Boulder. I am majoring in Media Production, and this definitely had stemmed from my love for editing videos, love for film and other media types alike. I took this class because I wanted to get just a bit more familiar with the media as a whole, and how it impacts our culture and society on a daily basis. I chose a digital camera for this exhibit, the Casio Exilim, because I have a Canon digital camera of my own, and it truly holds a special place in my heart. I wanted to be able to further some of my past knowledge into a camera I didn’t know that much about, and I think I did just that by working through this exhibit with my peers.
Carly Larkin: Hi, I am Carly Larkin! I am from San Diego, CA. I am a Communication major and Business minor here at CU and class of ’23. I took the class information, media, and technology, also known as CMDP 2010, to learn more about the technological, social, and personal impacts of technological changes throughout history. As a lover of music, being able to research the impacts of the iPod Nano was fascinating as it brought out lasting societal identities that are still present today. Taking this class definitely helped me understand the impacts of technology on society as a whole and how the devices we use on a daily basis came to be what they are.
Chancellor Pollock: Hi, my name is Chancellor Pollock. I am from Nantucket Massachusetts, I am currently a sophomore studying Media Production at the University of Colorado Boulder. I have always been interested in multiple different aspects of the film-producing industry since a young age. Whether it be filming, editing, writing scripts, coming up with video concepts, or even working with audio I have always had a passion for creating content within the media world. I chose to research and create my work on the original Xbox console because I had previously experienced using this console at my cousin's house years ago, and it had always interested me from a young age. I hope by looking through my pages can spark interest in others about the original Xbox console.
Colin Bailey: Hi, my name is Colin Bailey and I'm currently a junior journalism major with sports media and business minors at the University of Colorado Boulder. I'm originally from Chatsworth, California, located in the San Fernando Valley and is a part of Los Angeles County. I have always had a strong love for video games ever since my half-brother introduced me to them, making it easy for me to choose the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Nintendo as a whole has played a large part in my life with iconic games such as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, which is why I choose to explore Nintendo's first gaming console to be sold in the United States of America. I hope that you learn something new by clicking through our "The Evolution of Gaming Consoles" exhibit.
Gabby Riser: Hi, my name is Gabby Riser, I’m 20 years old and a sophomore at the University of Colorado Boulder. I grew up in Arvada, Colorado and I am majoring in media production and plan to minor in communications. I have had a love for video games, films, and music videos ever since I was a little girl and am grateful to have the opportunity to work on things in school that I am passionate about. I chose Sony's Playstation 2 as my object because I have many great childhood memories attached to it and still have two working consoles with a plethora of games. The Playstation 2 was the first video game console that really got me to fall in love with video games.
Gabby Ural: My name is Gabby Ural and I’m originally from The Bay Area. I'm currently a Freshman majoring in Psychology and minoring in Business at the CU Boulder. I took this class because I am interested in technology and its social impacts over the years. I chose to focus on the Graflex Series D camera because I love photography and am familiar with newer modern day cameras but was lacking knowledge of the history behind them. This interest motivated my research into a camera that was initially manufactured about a century ago.
Graham Debow: Hi, my name is Graham DeBow, and I am originally from Darien, Connecticut, but I moved out to Colorado to go to school at CU Boulder. I am currently a sophomore, majoring in media production and I chose to research the Sega Genesis because video games have always played a significant role in my life and I feel as though it is important to learn more about what helped build the industry into what it is today. I took this class to better my understanding of media in general, but also to improve my own work by learning new forms of research and practicing different techniques that play a role in my future.
Holden Taylor: Hi! My name is Holden Taylor, I am a sophomore at CU Boulder. I grew up in Denver and spent my freshman year of college at the University of Mississippi for Accounting and intend on becoming an Economics major. I took this course because I was interested in technology and have always wanted to understand the different sides of it. I chose the Kodak Instamatic Camera because I recognized the name Kodak and the camera had a familiar design. I chose to look at the economic side of the Instamatics life, hopefully providing a different perspective on the history of cameras.
Jake Hopfenberg: Hi, my name is Jake Hopfenberg and I’m from Orlando, FL. I am a business major (marketing and management) and also a Communications minor at CU class of ‘23. I chose to research the iPod Classic (120GB) because of the nostalgia I had connected to that device. It was one of the first Apple devices I had come across at the age of 8 and now 12 years later Apple has been one of the most influential companies of my generation. I am also very personal when it comes to music and the iPod Classic personalized music to an extreme. For that reason I felt this was the best technological device to provide the world with some more history and information about. I hope you enjoy the exhibit!
Max McCormack: Hey there, I’m Max McCormack and I am a freshman at the University of Colorado Boulder. I was born and raised in Chicago and had never left the city before coming to school here in Boulder and absolutely love it. I am currently studying to become a Comm major here at CU. I decided to take this course, CMDP 2010, because I’ve always been interested in media and technologies and wanted to see what new things I could learn that I just had no clue about before. For my final project, I decided to research and learn more about the Nokia 3120B. A small personal device that was released to us back in 2004. I learned a great deal both about myself as well as the object in question throughout this course and project. Hopefully by looking through these objects in these exhibits sparks a bit of curiosity or interest from yourself.
Maya Pickar: Hi! My name is Maya Pickar and i'm a junior at the University of Colorado Boulder majoring in Communication and minoring in Media Production. I am originally from New York but have loved living as a student in Boulder for the past 3 years. I took this course because I have always been extremely interested in history and thought it would be a great way to be introduced to the background of media production. As someone who has always been interested in the 70s and 80s era, I chose my object- the Sony Stereo Cassette Deck- in order to understand the cultural significance that the technology had on society. I learned that not only did the cassette play an important role in society at the time, but also helped pave the way for other small, personal devices to be created in the following decades.
Melynn Barber: Hi, my name is Melynn Barber and I’m currently a sophomore at the University of Colorado, Boulder majoring in Media Studies with a minor in Critical Media Practices. I’m originally from Austin, Texas but have always held Colorado very close to my heart and even considered it a second home. I took this course to explore the various research techniques involved within the media industry and its artifacts. Throughout the semester I’ve learned so much about how to successfully deep dive into a specific area of study and that I am capable of much more than what I had originally thought.
